We have implemented processes to reduce our electricity usage, our greatest single source of carbon emissions, wherever possible. Energy reduction, along with an accelerated shift to renewable energy sources, is also high on the agenda of Arts Queensland, which manages the Queensland Cultural Centre. Arts Queensland has been instrumental in funding upgrades to our air-conditioning and plant equipment, as well as transitioning to LED lights in the galleries and staff areas. These upgrades have resulted in significant emissions reductions and cost savings.

Brisbane’s sub-tropical climate brings unique challenges for conserving the State’s art collection. Temperature and humidity control are energy intensive processes, however QAGOMA’s Conservation team has recently led an Australian agreement to broaden those temperature and humidity requirements for domestic lending of artwork. This means we can reduce energy usage while maintaining our artwork in optimal conditions.

We have replaced single-use plastics in all service areas with sustainable and compostable materials. Ingredients are sourced from local suppliers wherever possible to support Queensland businesses and minimise the environmental impact of freight.

QAGOMA’s waste operations seek to divert waste from landfill at every opportunity. We donate, re-use and recycle most of the waste we produce during exhibition installations, and our carbon emissions reduction ambitions include progressive waste stream management strategies.
