Sustainability
QAGOMA’s sustainability vision is a commitment to becoming carbon neutral, minimising the environmental impact of our operations and displaying leadership in sustainable museum practices.
We have made sustainability a priority across all our activities, from driving greater resource efficiency in our large-scale exhibition making to minimising daily food waste in our cafes and restaurants.
The Gallery is committed to:
- achieving readiness for Climate Active carbon neutral certification through the Australian Government Department of Environment and Energy by the end of 2024-25
- reducing the environmental footprint of the Gallery’s operations
- enhancing energy management and emissions education
- improving procurement practices, including reducing purchasing of plastics
- re-using and re-purposing materials
- diverting waste streams away from landfill
Energy Management and Emissions Reduction
We have implemented processes to reduce our electricity usage, our greatest single source of carbon emissions, wherever possible. Energy reduction, along with an accelerated shift to renewable energy sources, is also high on the agenda of Arts Queensland, which manages the Queensland Cultural Centre. Arts Queensland has been instrumental in funding upgrades to our air-conditioning and plant equipment, as well as transitioning to LED lights in the galleries and staff areas. These upgrades have resulted in significant emissions reductions and cost savings.
Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning
Brisbane’s sub-tropical climate brings unique challenges for conserving the State’s art collection. Temperature and humidity control are energy intensive processes, however QAGOMA’s Conservation team has recently led an Australian agreement to broaden those temperature and humidity requirements for domestic lending of artwork. This means we can reduce energy usage while maintaining our artwork in optimal conditions.
Food and Beverage
We have replaced single-use plastics in all service areas with sustainable and compostable materials. Ingredients are sourced from local suppliers wherever possible to support Queensland businesses and minimise the environmental impact of freight.
Waste Operations
QAGOMA’s waste operations seek to divert waste from landfill at every opportunity. We donate, re-use and recycle most of the waste we produce during exhibition installations, and our carbon emissions reduction ambitions include progressive waste stream management strategies.
QAGOMA’s recycling streams include:
- Nitrile gloves
- Printer cartridges
- Soft plastics
- Batteries
- E-waste
- Paper and cardboard
- Organics
- Pens and markers
- Polystyrene
- Light bulbs
- Demolition waste
