About
Big Fish, one of visionary auteur Tim Burton’s most personal films, is about facing death without fear. Adapted from Daniel Wallace’s novel, it follows dual timelines in the life of Edward Bloom (Ewan McGregor/Albert Finney), taking us on fantastical journey through his youth as he succumbs to illness in the present.
Edward's embellishments on the past frustrate his journalist son Will (Billy Crudup), who just wants to hear a straightforward life story. But for the audience, Edward’s tall tales are an exquisitely realised and affectionate portrait of small-town America, filled with eccentric characters and sprinkled with dashes of Gothic whimsy.
Burton’s father passed away prior to the production of Big Fish, and the director’s recurring father-son theme is most lovingly and personally realised in this film. Meshing the real and unreal is at its heart, exploring both the fluid nature of memory and the nostalgia of the past.
