About
Adapting multiple stories by the legendary Japanese author Haruki Murakami, Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Drive My Car is a momentous and exquisitely composed film that explores the unsolvable mysteries of love, the infinite expanse of loss and the curious limitations of language. It follows acclaimed theatre actor-director Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima) as he prepares for a production of Chekov's 'Uncle Vanya' at a festival in Hiroshima. Still in the thrall of grief after the loss of his wife two years earlier, he slowly connects with Misaki Watari (Toko Miura), the young chauffeur assigned to drive him between the theatre and his accommodation, and starts to process his late partner's absence. A critical darling and a major crossover commercial success, Drive My Car propelled Hamaguchi to international prominence and confirmed his place as one of contemporary cinema's most exciting voices. He was nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay at the Academy Awards, and the film was awarded the Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
