When the fictional nation of Freedonia goes bankrupt, they must turn to the wealthy dowager Mrs Teasdale (Margaret Dumont) for financial assistance. Her condition for a bailout loan: the acid-tongued Rufus T Firefly (Groucho Marx) is to be made leader of the troubled nation. Meanwhile, Ambassador Trentino from the neighbouring rival country of Sylvania enlists two spies (Harpo and Chico Marx) to dig up dirt on Freedonia's wily new leader.
Often regarded as the magnum opus of the four Marx Brothers, Duck Soup had a faltering start. After failing to reach the heights of success of their previous pictures, it became the final film the Marx Brothers made with Paramount before they jumped studios to MGM. Over the years, the film has become acclaimed as one of the greatest American comedies ever produced. It remains a hilarious and anarchic take on war, politics and the very concept of order itself.
