About
Ana Vaz’s experimental wildlife documentary is a sensory experience on the edge of modernity and wildness.
The city of Brasilia is depicted as a literal concrete jungle: having encroached on the habitats of giant otters, anteaters, monkeys, cobras, capybaras, owls, maned wolves and foxes, the film explores these animals at large in the urban landscape.
Shot in day-for-night technique with deliberately jarring, in-and-out-of-focus camera work and discomfiting closeups, Vaz foregrounds the animals’ point of view. The camera lingers on their faces and bodies, with humans remain largely faceless and dialogue used sparsely. Decontextualised and unencumbered by a linear timeline and lack of the usual documentary narrative devices such as narration or title cards, the film invites immersion and freedom of interpretation.
Ages 12+ | Contains mild references to animal cruelty
