About
蝴蝶夫人 (Madame Butterfly) 2009
Drawing inspiration from Puccini’s opera of the same name, Madame Butterfly finds a woman played by Pearlly Chua penniless, poorly, and wandering through a bustling depot as she unsuccessfully beseeches her boyfriend to pick her up. The handheld camera closely tracks her every move in two unbroken shots as she grows increasingly restless and bothered, before – as the film’s anxious mood peaks – giving way to a warm and nostalgic moment of comfort.

洞2011 (The Hole 2011) 2011
Produced for Taiwanese fashion designer Johan Ku’s debut show at the 2011 Japan Fashion Week, The Hole 2011 features Taiwanese-Ukrainian model Larisa Bakurova wrapped in Ku’s signature woollen creations and soaked in violet lights. The short film is set in the cavernous world of subterranean Taipei, with a title that references Tsai’s 1998 feature The Hole, a film Ku cited as a key influence on his collection.
