About
Contemporary artist, DJ and filmmaker Ephraim Asili’s vibrant take on the essay feature explores themes of Black identity, political activism, and the power of community. Set in a West Philadelphia row house, the film follows Julian, a young man who, having inherited the house from his grandmother, uses it as a space for cultural exchange, political discussion and spiritual exploration.
Inspired by Asili's own experiences living in a Black Marxist collective in West Philadelphia in the 1990s, The Inheritance explores the African diaspora as a cultural force and draws on the histories of Black political movements, including the Black Panthers and MOVE, to deliberate on the challenges and possibilities of building collective power. Using a combination of archival footage, documentary-style interviews, and a scripted narrative, The Inheritance creates a dynamic portrait of a community grappling with the legacies of systemic racism and oppression whilst attempting to imagine a liberated collective future.
