About
In Jacques Demy’s classic musical, a luminous Catherine Deneuve plays Geneviève, who runs the titular umbrella shop with her widowed mother Madame Emery (Anne Vernon) and is in love with humble mechanic Guy (Nino Castelnuovo). When Guy is called up for military service and the Emerys fall on hard times financially, Madame tries to convince her pregnant daughter to marry the wealthy Monsieur Cassard (Marc Michel).
The film’s sumptuous design complements the heightened realism of its fully sung script. Vibrant pinks, blues, reds, and corals pop off the screen against the rain-drenched streets and fashion lovers will swoon at Deneuve’s mid-century wardrobe and hairstyles. Inspiring both Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023) and Damien Chazelle’s La La Land (2016), The Umbrellas of Cherbourg will leave you humming its signature tune (‘I Will Wait for You’) and dancing in the rain.
