About
“In my film, the underlying subject is doubt, the uncertainty of the husband in the face of the mute corpse […] It’s about the incommunicability, even if unrecognised, between two people who live together. The silence, the secrets…” – Robert Bresson
After a woman throws herself from her apartment balcony, her husband Luc recounts his memories of their troubled union. Adapting the Dostoevsky short story ‘A Gentle Creature’ (one that Bresson described as a usefully lesser achievement from the author), the director crafts a mosaic of uncertain remembrances as Luc attempts to recall and, at times, justify the past. Bresson’s first colour film, the ironically titled A Gentle Woman is a sad and sensual exploration of the friction that occurs when the passion of love meets the demands of control.
