About
Winner of the Golden Lion at the 1994 Venice Film Festival, Tsai Ming-liang’s Vive L’Amour further solidified his status as a singular cinematic artist. It follows a young real estate agent May Lin (Yang Kuei-mei, making the first of her many appearances in Tsai’s films) who brings her lover Ah-jung (Chen Chao-jung) to an apartment she is trying to sell. He quickly steals a key and surreptitiously moves in, unaware it is already secretly occupied by suicidal salesman Hsiao-kang (Lee Kang-sheng). A curious and dark farce plays out as the three unwittingly come and go from the same space, each searching for personal connection in the uncaring sprawl of Taipei. With this film, Tsai honed the style for which he would become renowned: his takes grew longer, his gaze more patient and his bursts of humour more unforgettably surreal.
