About
Tsai Ming-liang brings in the new millennium with What Time Is It There?, a spellbinding portrait of intercontinental loneliness. After street vendor Hsiao-kang (Lee Kang-sheng) sells Shiang-chyi (Chen Shiang-chyi) his own dual-time watch for her impending trip to France, he begins to turn all the clocks in his life to Paris time, causing his mother to believe her late husband has returned. Meanwhile, Shiang-chyi idles through Paris by herself, isolated through language and the indifference of the big city. Tsai masterfully renders the absurd weight of yearning in this deeply affecting, yet at times drolly funny, study of loss and dislocation.
