About
In a strange and unknown city, Anong hums the songs of his native city.
Maybe he is looking for something
Or maybe he awaits someone.
He meets the Walker
The encounter is like a dream
He awakes with a feeling of déjà vu.
– Tsai Ming-liang
The ninth film in the Walker series was commissioned by the Centre Pompidou to coincide with their survey of Tsai Ming-liang’s work in 2022-23. On the streets of Paris, Lee Kang-sheng as the Walker, a crimson-robed Buddhist monk, reprises his on-screen collaboration with Anong Houngheuangsy, a Laotian immigrant to Thailand who co-starred with Lee in Tsai’s feature film Days 2020. Whilst Lee makes his stately path through the streets of the French capital, Anong showers then kills time on the streets as the city washes around him, humming songs from his homeland. The two meet in the foyer of the Pompidou, where Lee continues his meditative journey across an enormous drawing created by Anong.
