About
1940. In the Japanese city of Kobe, wealthy businessman Yusaku Fukuhara (Issey Takahashi) runs an import-export firm. Increasingly suspicious of her husband's mysterious dealings, his wife Satoko (Yu Aoi) begins investigating him. She quickly finds herself a key player in a deadly game of international espionage involving the military officer Taiji (Masahiro Higashide, star of Asako I &II) and damning secrets of the state.
Wife of a Spy was directed by celebrated filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who mentored Ryusuke Hamaguchi during his studies at the Tokyo University of the Arts. Hamaguchi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kurosawa and fellow Happy Hour scribe Tadashi Nohara, uses the period setting as an opportunity to continue his ongoing exploration of performance and the unknowable nature of other's inner worlds. Here, public and private selves compete not only in domesticity but also on the global stage. Kurosawa presents the twisting drama in icy suspicious spaces, composed with his characteristic precision though a gauzy digital gaze.
