QAGOMA CELEBRATES DEDICATED BENEFACTORS WITH THE NAMING OF THREE GALLERY SPACES

The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) has announced a tribute to some of its most dedicated benefactors.

QAGOMA Director Chris Saines CNZM said the outstanding contributions of three donors have recently been honoured with three new named acknowledgments.

‘Alongside our GOMA Turns 10 celebrations, the three named spaces provide an excellent opportunity for us to recognise the crucial importance of benefaction to the Gallery, and in particular the inspiring giving of the three donors being honored,’ Mr Saines said.

At QAG, two spaces are now the Henry and Amanda Bartlett Galleries.

‘The late Henry and Amanda joined the Queensland Art Gallery Foundation in 1980 and were recognised as Special Patrons – the Gallery’s highest possible membership level.

‘Henry was also a member of the Queensland Art Gallery Board of Trustees from 1977 to 1987. Henry and Amanda’s loyal support during their lifetimes was followed by a generous bequest on Henry’s passing in February 2014,’ Mr Saines said.

The major Level 3 space at GOMA is now the Marica Sourris and James C. Sourris AM Galleries.

‘James has been a member of the Foundation for 19 years and is a Special Patron. He has made many important gifts to the Gallery’s Australian Art Collection, which form the very substantial ‘James C. Sourris AM Collection,’ Mr Saines said.

Finally, one of the galleries on GOMA’s ground floor is now the Eric and Marion Taylor Gallery, named for the late parents of Foundation member Paul Taylor.

‘Paul and Susan Taylor became members of the QAGOMA Foundation in 2012 and following their extraordinary support of the Gallery over the past four years, are now also recognised as Special Patrons,’ Mr Saines said.

The Taylor’s recent gift of Arthur Boyd’s remarkable Sleeping Bride 1957-58, which is among the most significant gifts in the Gallery’s history, is currently on display at GOMA.

These new named acknowledgements, the first in four years for the Gallery, join the existing spaces at QAG in honour of Philip Bacon AM, Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert AO, and Kenneth and Yasuko Myer; and The Fairfax Gallery at GOMA.

The Gallery’s major GOMA Turns 10 exhibition ‘Sugar Spin: you, me, art and everything’ is now showing until 17 April, 2017.
